DENSDOME- A VOTE recount in a major US state narrowly won by Donald Trump has been announced – sparking fears there could be a plot to sneak Hillary Clinton into the White House.
The shock move to reassess results in Wisconsin follows the filing of a petition to the state’s elections organiser by two groups, one of which backed US Green Party Presidential candidate Jill Stein.
Wisconsin Elections Commission Administrator Michael Haas said: “The Commission is preparing to move forward with a statewide recount of votes for President of the United States, as requested by these candidates.”
If the result of the November 8 election was overturned in the state, Hillary Clinton would still not have enough electoral college votes to become President.
The New York businessman won the state by less than 30,000 votes.
But Trump’s victory in the rust belt state sent shockwaves through the political establishment as he becoming the first Republican since Ronald Reagan in 1984 to win the traditionally-Democratic state.
Ms Stein has also pledged to file vote recounts in Michigan and Pennsylvania – states which also defied pollsters and shunned Hillary Clinton in favour of Trump.
Outsider Stein – who garnered just 1.04 per cent of the popular vote – said she will go forward with the recount requests due to “compelling evidence of voting anomalies.”
She added: “We do not have a smoking gun.
“On the other hand, we have a system that invites hacking, tampering and malfeasance.”
If recounts were called in the other two states targeted by the Green Party minnow, former First Lady Clinton could sneak into the White House.
The bid is being financed by a group of activists – including voting rights attorney John Bonifaz and University of Michigan Center director for Computer Security and Society J. Alex Halderman – who have scraped together more than £3million for their campaign.
